A significant public health achievement of 74.73 percent of the region’s barangays have attained zero open defecation (ZOD) status, as announced by the Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-WVCHD).

This accomplishment, which translates to 3,028 out of 4,052 barangays, marks a substantial step forward in improving community health and hygiene across Western Visayas.

During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas event, WVCHD Regional Director Adriano Suba-an attributed this success to the unwavering support and cooperation of local government units (LGUs).

Suba-an emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “What is important here is we stop the transmission of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and other infectious diseases.” This highlighted the critical role of sanitation in preventing disease and promoting overall public health.

The ZOD initiative is a key component of the DOH’s water sanitation hygiene (WASH) program, which prioritizes ensuring safe and sanitary living conditions for all. In 2023, the DOH provided funding to the municipalities of Buruanga in Aklan, Anini-y in Antique, and San Lorenzo in Guimaras for their advocacy and information campaigns. These municipalities have made commendable efforts to achieve ZOD status, serving as exemplary models for others in the region.

Looking ahead, the DOH plans to extend its support to four additional LGUs in Aklan, Antique, Negros Occidental, and Guimaras this year. This continued funding and advocacy underscore the DOH’s commitment to expanding the reach of the ZOD initiative and enhancing public health infrastructure throughout Western Visayas.

Suba-an also urged residents to adopt responsible sanitation practices, including proper waste disposal and responsible pet ownership. These measures are essential to maintaining the gains achieved and preventing the resurgence of sanitation-related diseases.

Access to Drinking Water

In addition to the ZOD achievements, the WVCHD reported impressive figures regarding access to water and sanitation facilities.

Currently, 95.32 percent of the population in Western Visayas has access to a safe basic water supply, and 53.98 percent have access to safely managed drinking water. Moreover, 91.16 percent of the region has access to basic sanitation facilities, with 69.78 percent enjoying safely managed facilities.

These statistics reflect significant progress in the region’s public health landscape, driven by comprehensive sanitation and water management initiatives.

However, the journey is far from over. Continued efforts and sustained commitment from both government bodies and the public are crucial to achieving 100 percent ZOD status and ensuring safe water and sanitation for all.
