The local government units in Western Visayas (Region 6) received P8.8 million from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) early this month representing the lotto shares of 56 beneficiary communities.

This is deemed as a positive development for the region as the move is seen to exemplify the core purpose of the PCSO —to generate funds for health and welfare programs while allowing Filipinos to enjoy lottery games responsibly.

The fund allocation to LGUs is a crucial aspect of decentralization to empower local communities in addressing specific needs.

Like many regions in the Philippines, Western Visayas faces various challenges in healthcare, education and infrastructure development.

These funds can be instrumental in supporting local projects and initiatives to improve the people's lives in the region.

Transparency, accountability

PCSO General Manager Melquiades Robles personally handed over the cheques to the concerned local officials of Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo, Antique, Negros Occidental, and Guimaras at the Capiz Provincial Capitol in Roxas City. The ceremony marks a strengthened partnership between the LGUs in the region and the PCSO.

The PCSO's commitment to transparency and accountability in distributing lottery proceeds is commendable.

Ensuring these funds are channeled to the proper beneficiaries, in this case, the LGUs is essential for building public trust.

When the public sees that the revenue generated from lottery games goes toward projects that benefit their communities, it can foster a more positive perception of such games.

Right direction

Robles said the agency will continue its mandate as the government charity arm to help indigent Filipinos needing financial or medical assistance.

PCSO, Hindi Umuurong Sa Pagtulong!

The turnover of P8.8 million in lotto shares to LGUs in Western Visayas by the PCSO is a step in the right direction. It aligns with the organization's mission of assisting those in need and supporting local development.

However, the PCSO must maintain transparency, accountability, and responsible gaming initiatives to ensure that the benefits of lottery games are maximized for the greater good of the Filipino people. (CML)
