Residents living near the Taal Volcano still need to be on guard, as authorities continue to record "low-level" volcanic unrest at the volcano.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a total of 74 volcanic earthquakes on May 2, while 6 volcanic tremors that lasted from two to eight minutes were recorded on May 4.

On May 5, PHIVOLCS recorded 71 volcanic earthquakes, including 11 volcanic tremors that lasted from one to two minutes.

Sulfur dioxide emitted slightly decreased from 1213 tonnes per day on April 30 to 977 tonnes per day as of May 2.

PHIVOLCS observed an increase of plume, or the buoyant mixture of volcanic particles and gas rises from the atmosphere. From May 1 to 4, weak emission was observed, while on the recent bulletin plume shows moderate emission with 1200 meters tall, and the direction is generally south.

Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 1, where entry to Taal Volcano Island is strictly prohibited.

According to the statement released by the Office of Civil Defense Calabarzon, Director Carlos Eduardo Alvarez III, “The alert level 1 of Taal volcano and the weak tremors experienced are considered common.”

The OCD underscores that the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) Calabarzon Emergency Operation Center with the DOST-PHIVOLCS remains on blue alert.

“For the residents near Taal volcano, be alert, prepared, and stay calm. We remind the public to continue monitoring the official advisories and bulletins of [OCD and PHIVOLCS] and local government,” Alvarez said.

PHIVOLCS reminded the public that there will be possible phreatic explosions, volcanic quakes, minor ashfall, and gas emissions.
