Life is a chain of infinity.
Each one is connected with another.
This is how entertainment journalist Art Tapalla (a native of Hilabaan, Dolores, Eastern Samar) views life. “Magkakadugtong lahat tayo. In my case, showbiz isn’t a separate reality from other fields of endeavor. What my niece experiences in her taking the nursing exams is part of showbiz and their spheres),” said Art.

O, di ba, magka-ugnay ‘yon (Why wouldn’t I say that they are connected with each other? When my niece was still studying, I was giving her money which I earned from my writing about stars. They connected, aren’t they?),” explained Tapalla.
Art’s niece is Gladys W. Balena, a Nursing graduate from Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) and graduated Cum Laude in 2023.
Gladys was a former nursing assistant and OFW, a wife and a mother who dreamed of becoming a registered nurse, has made it to the list of topnotchers, securing rank 10 in the NLE November 2024.
This is Balena’s social media posts: “This achievement is the result of nearly a decade of clinical experience as a nursing assistant, four years of dedication in nursing school, and months of focused review. This success would not have been possible without these incredible people in my life: To my husband, whose unwavering support has been with me from the very beginning. “I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my former mentors from the College of Nursing, led by the esteemed former Dean, Dr. Parambita. Your trust and faith in my abilities have inspired me to reach new heights. For that, you all share in this success.
“To my friends and classmates who have believed in me since day one, thank you so much.
“Finally, I owe this success to the Lord Almighty, whose wisdom and guidance have brought me this far. Siring ko pa, kaupod ko Ikaw Lord han nagshe-shade ako han ak scantron for I could not have achieved this without You.
All glory be to You, oh Lord!”
According to Art, his niece is a daughter of a Middle Eastern man by his sister.
Meanwhile, Samar politician Marcelino Libanan has extended his congratulatory remarks to Gladys via social media: Here’s Congressman Libanan’s words: “Isang taos-pusong pagbati sa'yo (Sincerest greetings), Gladys W. Baleña, sa iyong makasaysayang tagumpay bilang kauna-unahang (for your historic triumph and being the first) Top Notcher ng Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) College of Nursing and Allied Sciences sa Nursing Licensure Exam!
