As an artist, 1982 Binibining Pilipinas-Universe Maria Isabel Lopez doesn’t sit on her laurels.

As a film, television and stage actress, Maria Isabel sees to it that she advances her craft and relevance in the industry and in society as a whole.

“Gusto ko, lagi akong makikiisa sa mga tao. Kung ano ang problema nila, problema ko rin at sabay kaming maglulutas ng mga problemang ‘yon. (I would like to be with the people all the time. Their problems are my problems as well. I would like to solve our problems with them),” Lopez philosophized.

Maribel is aware of the many problems of the local movie industry and as a member of the Philippine entertainment community, she wants to know, get familiar and help solve the challenges.

“Kaya nga naging officer ako noong panahon ni ER Ejercito bilang presidente ng Katipunan ng mga Artista ng Pelikulang Pilipino at Telebisyon o Actors Guild. Ang dami kong natutunan sa mga problema noon sa mga kapwa ko artista. Pero hindi ko kaya lahat na lutasin ang mga ‘yon nang sarili ko lang. Kailangan ko ng tulong ng iba na mas may abilidad at mas nakakaalam ng mga problema ng (That’s why I intended to be an official of Actors Guild during his presidency. I learned a lot about the problems of my colleagues first-hand. But I cannot solve all the problems by myself alone. I need people who are more able, capable and knowledgeable of the problems in) showbiz,” gushed the award-winning actress.

It was an opportune time when she and fellow actress and beauty queen Azenith Briones went to the Senate to have courtesy calls on their politician-friends in the Upper House.

When Maribel met with Robin Padilla and Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr., both active members of the Upper Chamber, she didn’t mince words to come across her point of asking help from them about the problems besetting the industry in her own pace and style of communication. “Simple lang. Nilambing ko lang sila na kung puwede ay magawan ng paraan ang ibang problema ng showbiz at initially, Robin and Bong have been sharing their time and effort to contribute solutions to the problems of actors like working hours which is stipulated in the Eddie Garcia Law,” said Maria Isabel.

The beauty queen from Cagayan de Oro City also met up with Senator Bato de la Rosa who also gave his two-cent worth of idea in solving problems in the industry although he isn’t directly part of the field.
