Almost seven decades after the last bombs fell on Manila during World War II, artifacts of one of the darkest moments in the capital's history still manage to surprise modern-day residents.
This Thursday, November 28, aviation police reported that an old bomb was unearthed on MIA Road, close to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2, during a road widening operation.
The police said the operation near the terminal was briefly stopped after construction workers, who were digging in the area, found the vintage bomb.
Engineers on the ground promptly informed the Philippine National Police - Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup), and Airport Police to ensure the area was secured in the hopes of discovering more explosive devices.
The vintage bomb, manufactured in the United States, measures 54 inches in length and 63 inches in diameter, purportedly utilized by Americans in World War II.
Avsegroup said that the explosive device was brought to their headquarters along Airport Road in Pasay City for assessment of its functuality, after which it will be safely transported to Tarlac for appropriate disposal.
