It was jampacked.

The retrospective showing of the 2000 film, Star Cinema’s “Anak” written by now National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, directed by Rory Quintos and starred in by Vilma Santos, now Vilma Santos-Recto, Claudine Barretto, Cherry Pie Picache, Amy Austria, Joel Torre, Leandro Munoz, Baron Geisler, among others.

The St. Paul University of Quezon City hosted the historic screening of the award-winning film and all-time box-office hit of ABS-CBN Film Productions and the school was proud and honored to have organized the event in the pursuit of relevant education through film appreciation.

Lipa City Pride and Star for All Seasons Vilma, NA Ricardo Lee, also known as Ricky Lee and Claudine Barretto graced the occasion and they were warmly welcomed by SPUQC and other students and faculty members of schools in Metro Manila and neighboring towns and cities.

During the showing in the darkness of the hall, tears fell incessantly from the audiences as the film delineated familiar experiences from the lives of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) and their families like the sacrifices of mothers do just to raise their children well.

Observers from the sideline also shed tears as they empathized with the characters and their impoverished situations in life.

Unfortunately, Claudine failed to join the throwback portion of the symposium because she had a previous commitment.

It was Vi and Ricky who stayed until the Q&A ended.

According to Ate (a term of endearment to an older sister by blood or affinity) Vi, former mayor of Lipa City, governor of Batangas and congresswoman of the lone district of Lipa, the film is still relevant because it still mirrors the current lives of our OFWs.

“The film is very relevant,” said Santos-Recto.
“Ang ibig sabihin ng pelikula, hanggat ganito ang sistema ng ating lipunan, hindi mawawala ang mga problema. Wala sa pamilya ang problema kundi ang mga idinudulot sa pamilya ng mga kondisyon ng paligid (The film says that until this oppressive social and political systems are eradicated, problems in the family especially economic problems will stay. The problems don’t necessarily emanate from the family but the factors outside the family contribute a lot to the bigger problems),” opined Lee
