When ABS-CBN Entertainment News Bureau Chief Mario V. Dumaual was still alive, he joked about his consultancy stint with the network during his planned early retirement from the media.
"Con-sulsol-tancy," Mario giggly jeered purportedly alluding to "consultancy job," an oxymoron concoction of sorts in advising good-naturedly on a case while adding fuel to flames.
Could this be the nature of a consultancy post given to veteran megman Jose "Kaka" Balagtas by Water Plus Productions?
As is, "Kaka" (a pet name prevalent among Tagalog elder folks and christened to the action director by colleagues) was assigned to consult with actor Efren Reyes, Jr. who's embarking on his second directorial berth in "Idol: The April Boy Regino Story."
Definitely, Balagtas wouldn't be a "con-sulsol-tant," seriously cleared out by the people of Water Plus Productions.
It is because the staff of the company regard "Kaka" as a no-nonsense director.
"We have been partnering with Direk Kaka in some of our projects before so we got him as an important veteran artist to help us out in the carrying out of the project on the life of April Boy Regino," said Marynette Gsmboa, the producer of Water Plus.
"Kaka and I have been working on a lot of films, especially action movies. We are accustomed to each other. We have the same vision in advancing the local movie industry," explained Efren.
Meanwhile, Balagtas is all praises on Reyes.
"Nakakagulat ang style ni Jun sa pagdidirek. Mahusay siya. Kasi, may pinagmanahan naman siya. Ang tatay niya, si Efren Reyes, Sr., magaling at premyadong direktor. (Jun's directing style is amazing. He's good, huh. It is because he has inherited a lot from his late dad who aside from being an actor was also an award-winning director)," shared Kaka, who is known for box-office action caper hits like "David Balondo ng Tondo" with Ramon Revilla, "Magdaleno Orbos" with Eddie Garcia, "Talahib at Rosas" with Cesar Montano, "Anak ng Kumander" with Manny Pacquiao, among others.
"Mabilis magtrabahp si Jun (He works fast)," observed the veteran director.
