Pope Francis has made a significant decision by appointing a Filipino priest as the new undersecretary of a section within the Dicastery for Evangelization in the Vatican.
This notable appointment spotlights Msgr. Erwin Jose Balagapo, who hails from Sulat, Eastern Samar.
At 53 years old, Balagapo has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to his vocation, which has led to this prestigious role.
The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News reported that his promotion was made official this month, marking an important milestone in his ecclesiastical career.
Prior to this appointment, Balagapo had already been serving the dicastery as the head of office for the section on “first evangelization and new particular churches” since July 2023.
It is a role that underscores his capability and readiness to take on more responsibility within the Church.
The section he now assists is under the leadership of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, who has his own illustrious history as the former head of the Archdiocese of Manila.
The fact that Balagapo will work closely with such esteemed figures in the Church adds to the significance of his new position.
The Dicastery for Evangelization was established in 2022 under the apostolic constitution Praedicate Evangelium, taking over from the former Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, also referred to as “Propaganda Fide.”
This modern approach to evangelization is vital for the Church’s mission, and Balagapo’s involvement signals a commitment to this ongoing endeavor.
His educational background further enhances his qualifications, having earned a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and a Licentiate in Moral Theology from the former Pontifical Institute “John Paul II.”
Balagapo’s ordination took place in 1996 for the Archdiocese of Palo, Philippines, where he has taken on multiple roles that showcase his dedication and expertise.
His experience includes serving as a professor of canon law, head of ongoing formation for clergy, judicial vicar, and chancellor of the archdiocese.
His extensive background in various responsibilities has uniquely prepared him for this role at the Vatican, allowing him to bring a wealth of knowledge and pastoral insight.
Since moving to Rome, he has worked diligently within the Vatican dicastery, beginning in 2015 after completing his advanced studies.
Balagapo's journey from Sulat, Eastern Samar, to one of the highest echelons of the Catholic Church illustrates the global nature of Catholicism and the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
His elevation to undersecretary is not just a personal achievement, but also a proud moment for his hometown and the Filipino community at large.
