The Calamba Water District (CWD) is banking on a new “cutting-edge” technology to provide clean water for its customers.
The new technology – an ultraviolet (UV) hydro-optic disinfection system – was recently implemented at its pumping station in Barangay Bucal.
Exequiel Aguilar Jr., general manager of CWD, said this advanced disinfection method reduces the need for chlorine in the service pipes that supply households.
Submerged closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems are also now in place to monitor the clarity of the water in the reservoir.
CWD has allocated P100 million for this initiative, entirely funded through its own revenues, being classified as a government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC).
As part of the modernization efforts, CWD has also established a water meter laboratory to ensure accurate billing for consumers and a bacteriological laboratory to analyze water samples from various connections throughout the city.
Meanwhile, CWD has also opened what it called the first government-owned septage treatment plant at Barangay Palo Alto.
The new septage plant aims to process “poso negro” or sewage water, where solid and liquid waste from sewage can be converted to fertilizer or “panambak.”
The new plant is part of initiatives of the city government of Calamba under Mayor Ross Rizal to abide by the Supreme Court Mandamus for the preservation of Manila Bay.
Cities and municipalities along the shoreline of Laguna de Bay are also part of the mandamus to clean up Manila Bay, as water from the lake flows into the Pasig River system that ultimately flows to Manila Bay.
