SAN JOSE DE BUENAVISTA, Antique – In a pivotal address during San Remigio's 160th Foundation Day, DILG Undersecretary Jonathan Tan underscored the critical need for a sustainable water solution in the municipality. Tan's call to action comes amid growing concerns over water shortages impacting both residents and the burgeoning tourism sector.
Mayor Margarito Mission Jr. echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the municipality's dire need for a reliable potable water source. "We cannot afford to delay any longer," Mission stated, highlighting the economic and developmental implications of inadequate water infrastructure.
Tan proposed exploring private investment as a viable solution, citing the potential for accelerated project implementation and enhanced service delivery. "I urge Mayor Mission and the municipal councilors to consider partnering with private investors to establish a robust water system," Tan urged, pledging DILG's support in facilitating connections with interested parties.
Acknowledging financial constraints, Mission revealed the municipality's inability to fund a PHP200 million water system independently. "We are open to private investment as a pragmatic approach to swiftly addressing our water crisis," Mission affirmed, noting the limitations of previous government efforts.
The urgency stems from ongoing water rationing affecting several barangays, despite past initiatives funded by a PHP50 million loan. Unfortunately, this funding fell short, leaving many communities underserved and exacerbating local water insecurity.
San Remigio's appeal for intervention extends beyond necessities, encompassing the pivotal role of water security in sustaining tourism and economic growth. With its picturesque landscapes and cool climate, the municipality remains a popular destination in Antique, underscoring the imperative for sustainable development practices.
Looking ahead, Mission expressed optimism about upcoming discussions with potential investors, including exploratory meetings planned in Metro Manila. Alternative options such as SALINTUBIG are being considered, albeit with longer timelines contingent on securing external funding.
As San Remigio navigates these challenges, the collaboration between local authorities, national agencies, and private stakeholders emerges as a beacon of hope for realizing long-term water resilience. The journey toward securing a reliable water supply promises not only immediate relief but also a sustainable future for generations to come.
