TACLOBAN CITY – The University of the Philippines Tacloban College (UPTC) is investigating an alleged data breach involving its Learning Management System (LMS).
The investigation is made as a response to a social media post alleging that two data breaches surfaced online involving UP’s LMS and Ormoc City government.
According to the post, a certain “jamesyu” claims to be selling data from the LMS UPTC wherein the dataset reportedly includes more than 1,600 rows of student information including full names, official university email addresses under the domain @up.edu.ph , city locations and link to profile images.
In a statement, UPTC said its LMS team immediately contacted the UP Diliman LMS team where the LMS server is currently hosted.
“On the advice of the technical team that is currently conducting the investigation, we immediately put the LMS in maintenance mode as a precautionary measure,” the UPTC statement said.
“In the meantime, stakeholders are advised to remain vigilant by reviewing account access and activity and reporting any irregularities to the LMS Helpdesk,” it added.
Meanwhile, the same post also said that a threat actor identified as “paradox” allegedly leaked files from the Ormoc City Government including business records such as sworn gross sales statements, mayor’s permits, compliance forms and notarized submissions of taxpayers and business owners.
The Ormoc City government has not issued a statement and its website is ormoc.gov.ph is accessible online.
