KALIBO, Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco), the primary power distributor in Aklan province and the northern towns of Antique, recently announced an increase in electricity rates for April.

This adjustment, amounting to P1.4962 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for residential consumers, is primarily attributed to an uptick in the generation charge.

Residential consumers, particularly those consuming 21 kWh, will experience a rate of P13.5106 per kWh this month, compared to P12.0144 per kWh in March. Similarly, high voltage consumers (commercial) will see an increase from P9.2345 per kWh to P10.8905 per kWh, while low voltage consumers (commercial) will observe a rise from P11.0818 per kWh to P12.5719 per kWh.

Volatile Market Price

Factors contributing to these adjustments include higher charges from Independent Power Producers and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), driven by volatile market prices for energy.

Despite these changes, Akelco reassures consumers that the Distribution, Supply, and Metering System Charge has remained unchanged at P1.6109 per kWh since 2009.

In response to the rate adjustment, Akelco encourages consumers to adopt energy-saving practices to manage their electricity consumption effectively.

These include turning off lights and electrical appliances when not in use, applying insulation at home to reduce energy bills, switching to energy-efficient appliances, and installing programmable or smart thermostats.

For further inquiries or assistance regarding energy efficiency practices and other concerns, consumers are encouraged to visit Akelco's area offices or contact the Corporate Planning and Utilities Division at 036-2747525. Additionally, they can reach out to the Customer Care Call and Text hotline at 144 or 09074223629.

By staying informed and implementing energy-saving measures, consumers can navigate through electricity rate adjustments more effectively while contributing to sustainable energy consumption practices in Aklan.
