The mastermind behind Good Shepherd Ube Jam may have joined the Creator, but her legacy - of creating an iconic brand that helped send thousands of youths to schools - will continue to live on.

SISTER Fidelis Atienza, the creator of Good Shepherd ube jam and angel cookies died on March 20 at the advance age of 102, but she will be remembered forever for her good deeds and for the literal sweet memories she left behind.

“She was the original mastermind behind the ube jam, enabling the congregation to send thousands of youths to school,” the congregation said.

She founded the Marian Bakery in 1960s introducing us to host cuttings for the delicious “crispies” that would become today’s “angel cookies”.

Sr. Fidelis introduced Ube jam in 1976 as part of Good Shepherd Mountain Maid products.

The other three food products at that time Strawberry Jam, 1953 (Sr. Carmel Medalla RGS) and Peanut Brittle, 1970 (Sr. Consuelo Ferrer RGS), and skinless peanut adobo, 1970 (Sr. Jeanette Rimando).

The Mountain Maid Training Center, the group behind the Good Shepherd Baguio products opened an online store last year but closed it as the city started reopening travel and tourism in January.

However, the Good Shepherd Tagaytay store which carries the Bahay Pastulan brand is open to service Metro Manila and nearby areas, SPEW PH continues to offer our products online through their website and Lazada platforms.

Mountain Maid was first created for the convent sisters to establish an orphanage.

Their first product, the strawberry jam attracted local and foreign tourists because it allowed them to take home strawberries without having to worry about the short shelf life.

Soon, the brand offered more products from jam, butter, marmalade, to cookies, crinkles, alfajor, and more. The convent was able to support the orphanage and send numerous Cordillera youth to school.

The enterprise has faced challenges such as the 1990 earthquake, the meningococcemia outbreak in 2004, and a number of unauthorized distributors. COVID-19 is only one of the challenges they must face now. (HD)
