Government forces engaged in a brief firefight with remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Las Navas, Northern Samar on June 13, 2026.

According to military reports, soldiers from the 43rd Infantry Battalion encountered about nine armed members of the Sub-Regional Committee Emporium under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee in Barangay Caputoan.

The clash lasted for seven minutes, forcing the rebels to withdraw southward.

No government casualties were reported, while the military claimed losses on the rebel side.

Pursuit operations were immediately launched to prevent the group from regrouping and threatening nearby communities.

The military assessed that the presence of the armed group was part of a failed attempt to reconnect with former supporters and regain influence in the area.

Officials emphasized that sustained security operations, government development programs, and localized peace initiatives have significantly weakened insurgent activity in Northern Samar.

Communities have become more resistant to insurgent resurgence, with residents actively providing information to authorities about rebel movements.

Northern Samar has long been affected by communist insurgency, but recent years have seen a steady decline in rebel influence.

This has been attributed to the surrender of former rebels, stronger community-based peace engagements, and increased government presence in remote villages.

The cooperation of civilians has become a crucial factor in sustaining peace and preventing insurgents from re-establishing their foothold.

The 8th Infantry Division highlighted that residents now recognize the benefits of peace, development, and responsive governance, making it harder for insurgents to regain ground.

Authorities assured the public that ongoing operations will continue to focus on protecting communities, preventing the resurgence of armed groups, and supporting long-term peace and development efforts in Northern Samar.

This clash serves as reminder of the continuing struggle between remnants of insurgent groups and government forces, but it also reflects the resilience of communities that now favor peace and progress over armed conflict.
