Calbiga, Samar– In an innovative approach to waste management and sustainability, Barangay Patong has introduced a new initiative that transforms discarded paper cups and Zesto boxes into grower cups for planting vegetables.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Barangay Health Officers (BHO) and Barangay Health Assistants (BHA), aims to address waste reduction while promoting urban gardening within the community.
Due to the prohibition of certain types of waste, like paper cups and juice boxes, on the garbage trucks, the collected materials at the barangay’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) are being repurposed as planting containers for crops such as pechay and sitaw.
Once the seedlings sprout, they will either be transferred to the HAPAG Community Garden or distributed to households, encouraging residents to grow their own vegetables in their backyards.
This initiative not only helps reduce waste in the barangay but also provides a source of fresh vegetables for the community.
“It’s a simple waste diversion effort, but it has a significant impact on both reducing garbage and supplying nutritious food to our neighbors,” Rommel Rutor, punong barangay said.
The program has received praise from residents and local leaders alike.
The barangay’s health workers were particularly commended for their leadership and dedication in turning this idea into a reality.
This effort is part of Barangay Patong’s larger sustainability strategy, which seeks to promote a healthier, cleaner, and greener environment for its residents.
