The issue of school security has once again been thrown into the limelight following yet another school shooting incident at a private school in Zamboanga City last week.
As schools ramp up measures to ensure the safety of their students inside their campus, some have turned to creative measures such as mandating the use of transparent backpacks.
At the San Jose National High School (SJNHS) in Tacloban City, where memories of last June's shooting incident that killed three students are still painfully fresh, a major automotive company has stepped up and provided students with transparent backpacks to ensure peace of mind.
Last August 17, Toyota Tacloban Inc. turned over these transparent backpacks to 1,620 students of SJNHS, reflecting its support towards efforts to strengthen campus safety measures.
Jimmy Yaokasin Jr., chairperson and president of Toyota Tacloban Inc., said the initiative helps promote a greater sense of security within the school community.
“This is one way that we can help them come to school with a sense of security. The transparent backpacks are expected to make it easier for school guards to check the students’ belongings while maintaining a safer and more secure learning environment,” he said during the turnover event.
Verna Estrella, head teacher for the school’s Technology and Livelihood Education department, expressed gratitude to Toyota Tacloban for supporting the welfare and safety of its students.
“This is a gesture of support, care and partnership that reminds our students that our stakeholders are sincere in promoting a safe, disciplined and supportive learning environment,” Estrella said. “Your contribution will surely make a difference in the daily lives of our learners and will strengthen our efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of students.”
Estrella also encouraged the learners to take good care of their backpacks and appreciate the thought and efforts behind the donation as a reminder to be responsible, disciplined and grateful.
