SMC Tollways CEO Manuel Bonoan is expected to succeed Secretary Roger Mercado, who in turn replaced Senator-elect Manny Villar as DPWH secretary in October 2021.
President-elect Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr. has nominated an executive from a major tollway company to lead the government's continuing massive infrastructure drive.
In an interview with select media members Thursday (May 26), Marcos said he is nominating Manuel Bonoan, chief executive officer of SMC Tollways, as the new secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
‘He spent almost his entire professional life in the DPWH, I know him very well. I know he will do a good job,” he added.
Bonoan is expected to succeed Secretary Roger Mercado, who in turn replaced Senator-elect Manny Villar as DPWH secretary in October 2021.
This will be the second time for Bonoan, an engineer who has headed SMC Tollways - the infrastructure arm of conglomerate San Miguel Corporation - at the DPWH, after previously serving as DPWH undersecretary during the Estrada and Arroyo administrations.
