“TikTok made me buy it.” Popular words among Generation Z’s having something bought from a TikTok shop or influenced by content creators. TikTok dominates other social media outlets as a new source for Gen Zs in everything: news, tutorials, and even fashion. One might say that the outlet has become a major driver of fashion trends for this generation. TikTok nowadays is not just a social media platform but a catalyst for a new wave of fashion trends that reflect Gen Z’s values of individuality, sustainability, and inclusivity.
Fashion without the limits
TikTok has a “For You” page that determines what videos should appear on the audience’s feed, it works by analyzing the so-called signals by determining what content they want to see based on their likes, shares, follows, and comments which is defined as the algorithm.
This promotes a wide range of content creators appearing on the page regardless of their follower count, allowing diverse voices to influence fashion.
Traditional fashion gatekeepers such as magazines and designers are the limit of our way in fashion.
However, today, “sky’s the limit” when it comes to this topic as we see everyday users and micro-influencers giving us a variety of ideas in the topic of dressing up.
Fashion trends
There are some of the most in-demand fashion trends that are catered to sustainability, recycling, and upcycling.
Trifted Fashion is one of a few that led to the rise of second-hand shopping, making new clothes out of old ones and making thrift hauls trendy.
Another one is DIY clothing, the popularity of customizing clothes into more up-to-date unique pieces, making it at home which was often driven by TikTok tutorials.
And of course, the vintage revival, the comeback of 90’s and 2000’s fashion through Tiktok with influencers showcasing how to style retro pieces.
The influence of TikTok on fashion inclusivity, celebrating diverse body types, and gender expressions, some examples are the rise of statement pieces, plus size friendly styles, and men being more open to wearing feminine vogues, such as skirts.
It’s a testament to fashion evolution in a unique direction.
In line with positives and sustainable impacts, there still are downsides of TikTok-driven fashion, such as pressure to constantly keep up with trends, and the over-commercialization of authentic content.
We cannot also keep the fact that even with the promotion of sustainability, the fast-paced nature of TikTok trends has their potential contribution to fashion’s environmental impact.
As everyone wants to hop on the bandwagon, the platform has become a tool for perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards and the rapid cycle of fashion trends.
The TikTok fashion virals have promoted some local products, and fashion has become more open to wide horizons of styles that might reflect on the lasting impact of TikTok in the fashion industry.
As 64 percent of Gen Z’s are on TikTok, fashion may continue to evolve as we mature and new platforms emerge.
