In the bustling streets of Iloilo City, a transformation is underway as the Kikik Kollektive embarks on the restoration of the iconic Teresa Magbanua & Bakunawa mural. Led by a talented team of artists including Marrz Capanang, Noel Epalan Jr., Rafael Indicio, Khian Barniego, Jesson Boco, and Vinsoy Cordova, this artistic endeavor not only celebrates the Ilonggo culture but also pays homage to the indomitable spirit of Teresa Magbanua—a legendary figure in Ilonggo history.

Located along Muelle Loney Street, the Teresa Magbanua & Bakunawa mural serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Iloilo's past and the creative ingenuity of its present. With strokes of vibrant hues and intricate details, the mural breathes new life into the narrative of Teresa Magbanua, whose contributions to Ilonggo history remain etched in the annals of time.

Teresa Magbanua, often hailed as the "Joan of Arc of the Visayas," was a fearless revolutionary who played a pivotal role in the Philippine struggle for independence against Spanish colonial rule. As one of the few female generals in the Katipunan, Magbanua defied societal norms and paved the way for women to participate actively in the fight for freedom. Her unwavering courage and commitment to the cause continue to inspire generations of Ilonggos, embodying the resilience and determination that define the spirit of the Filipino people.

The re-painting of the Teresa Magbanua & Bakunawa mural not only commemorates her remarkable legacy but also serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the face of modernization and change. Through art, we can bridge the gap between the past and the present, weaving a narrative that honors our collective identity and fosters a sense of belonging within our communities.

Moreover, the inclusion of the Bakunawa—a mythical creature deeply rooted in Filipino folklore—adds an element of mystique and wonder to the mural, inviting viewers to delve into Filipino mythology and symbolism. As a guardian of the heavens and harbinger of cosmic balance, the Bakunawa embodies the interconnectedness of all living beings and the cyclical nature of existence—a theme that resonates deeply with the cultural fabric of Iloilo City.

As we celebrate Arts Month in Iloilo City, the restoration of the Teresa Magbanua & Bakunawa mural serves as a fitting tribute to the transformative power of art and its ability to transcend boundaries, unite communities, and ignite the flames of inspiration. Through collaborative efforts and creative expression, we honor the legacies of our forebears and pave the way for a brighter, more culturally enriched future.

In the words of Teresa Magbanua herself, "Let us continue to fight for what is just and true, and let our voices echo through the halls of history for generations to come." As the colors of the mural dance against the canvas of the cityscape, may we be reminded of the enduring power of art to inspire change, provoke thought, and ignite the flames of revolution in the hearts of all who behold it.
