As preparations go into high gear for the resumption of classes this July, the provincial government of Laguna has started preparing temporary classrooms for students of Laguna University (LU) in Santa Cruz.
According to Laguna Provincial Information Officer Danilo Lucas, the Laguna LGU is now in the process of converting a storage building within the Laguna University complex into 14 temporary classrooms and a faculty room to ensure classes proceed uninterrupted when the first semester opens in July.
The move, Lucas said, followed the closure of LU's main building last year following the discovery of major weaknesses in the building's structure.
“The temporary classrooms are being fitted with armchairs and air-conditioning units to provide a conducive learning environment while authorities complete their assessment of the damaged structure,” Lucas said in a phone interview.
Lucas added that the governor has ordered that the temporary classrooms be ready before classes begin, and that Laguna University must comply with the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) face-to-face directives.
“I will not allow that there will be no classrooms available in July, and I will not allow Laguna University to fail to comply with CHED’s directive,” Lucas said, quoting the governor during an ocular inspection of the classrooms under construction a day earlier.
Lucas mentioned the investigation into the cracked building is ongoing and that they will work with CHED and the university to ensure safety and compliance.
The four-storey building had been ordered vacated last April 2025 after large cracks were observed on the building’s walls and columns.
Half of LU's 7,000 students have been undergoing online classes pending the construction of the temporary classrooms, while the Athletes’ Village inside the Laguna Sports Complex were also used as temporary classrooms.
