Students and teachers at the Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home Industries in Tanauan, Leyte were shocked by the brazen shooting of a schoolteacher inside the campus last October 16.
Police identified the victim as schoolteacher Elizabeth Mandreza and the suspect as her husband, Adan Mandreza, who was arrested shortly after the incident.
Initial investigation revealed that Adan confronted his wife inside the campus in Barangay Canramos in a fit of rage, pulled out a .38-caliber revolver and shot her in the shoulder.
Fellow teachers immediately rushed Elizabeth to a nearby hospital, where she remains under treatment.
After the shooting, the suspect reportedly attempted to take his own life using a butterfly knife (*balisong*).
However, responding police officers subdued and disarmed him before he could inflict further harm.
According to authorities, the suspect claimed jealousy as the motive, believing his wife was involved in an extramarital affair.
The couple had reportedly been living separately for over a year prior to the attack.
Tanauan Municipal Police Chief P/Lt. Col. Elmer Rufo said that charges of frustrated parricide are being prepared against the suspect.
"We are finalizing the documentation and witness statements for the filing of the case,” Rufo said.
The incident has raised alarm over security measures within school premises and renewed calls to address domestic violence.
Teachers and residents described the event as “deeply disturbing,” emphasizing that schools should be safe spaces for educators and students alike.
Authorities assured that additional police visibility will be implemented in the area as the investigation continues.
