Tayabas City, Quezon is finally rolling out its Covid-19 vaccination program for seniors, amid hesitancy among the populace on the effectiveness of the vaccine.

TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – AWARE of the importance of protecting the lives of the elderly, the city government of Tayabas, Quezon has allowed recently the use of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine for 231 senior citizens under the Category A2 through the program “Tayabas Vaccination Against Covid-19” (Project TaVac).

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier gave its approval for Sinovac use on the elderly “after considering the recommendation of the experts and the current situation of high Covid-19 transmission and limited available vaccines.”

The LGU allowed vaccination for the first batch, provided there is stringent evaluation of the person’s health status and exposure risk.

The second jab will be administered on June 4, 2021.

In an interview with Opinyon Quezonin, Fredeswinda Carillo, 72 years old and a retired master teacher, said that she needed the jab for protection against Covid 19.

“Ang vaccine ay hindi sapilitanayon sa mga health officers subalit ito ay lubos na inirerekomenda lalo na sa mga lolo at lola na karaniwang may mga co-morbidities o mga sakit,” she said.

“Ito ay proteksiyon laban sa pagkakaroon ng malubhang sintomas o kritikal na kaso ng Covid-19. Kaya agad agad akong nag-online registration para agad agad na mabigyan ng bakuna,” Carillo added.

As Covid-19 vaccines roll out in Tayabas City, many people are still hesitant.

“Meron akong agam-agam dahil sa mga balitang epekto ng Covid na sinasabi sa social media o mga sabi sabi. Sa aking bahagi, sa tulong ng aking mga panalangin wala naman akong naramdamang anumang side effects,” added Carillo.

Carillo thanked the government and LGU Tayabas for the free vaccine.

Side effects

As with any vaccine, patients may experience adverse effects after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine.

Common adverse effects include: tenderness, pain, warmth, redness, itching or swelling on the arm where you got the injection.

Even if the vaccine protects from symptomatic and moderate to severe forms of Covid-19, vaccinated persons should still continue to protect themselves and their families.

It could be done by wearing face mask and face shield, washing their hands, avoiding crowded places, ensuring good ventilation at home or place of work, and maintaining one-meter social distancing.

As of May 7, Tayabas City has 95 active cases, five probable, 25 suspected cases, and 958 total Covid-19 cases according to a report by the City Information and Community Relations Office. (AG)
