An 84 year old law badly needs upgrade to fit the needs of now highly and technically advanced environment. And the Lower House of the Philippine Congress exactly did that.

Last year, the Lower House under the leadership of Speaker Martin Romualdez, passed the BI Modernization Act, recognizing the need for the bureaucracy to be responsive to the needs of the times in guarding the country’s borders.

The proposed law is expected to pass the Senate middle of this year as Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, earlier this week renewed his push for the passage of this bill.

Commissioner Norman Tansingco of the Bureau of Immigration expressed hope the BI’s expectation of having this law passed by the middle of this year sees reality.

He extended his appreciation to lawmakers for their support to the agency’s proposed new law.

“Thank you Hon. Speaker Martin Romualdez for showing the way in addressing what needs to be done in the security of our borders,” Tansingco said, as he expressed the same gratitude to Sen. Bong Go for making an early call for the passage of the bill.

In the Senate, the bill is in the Committee of Justice chaired by Sen. Tolentino.

Employees of the BI are hoping Sen. Tolentino will give this bill the priority it has received from the Lower House.
