Taclobanon lady boxer qualifies for Paris 2024 Olympics

It's indeed a woman's world as well in the boxing arena.

Such as, a Taclobanon is a proud pugilist in a male-dominated sport.

According to the Tacloban City Information Office on its Facebook wall, "Aira Villegas, 28, from Barangay 6-A, Tacloban City, has secured her place in the Paris 2024 Olympics after a stunning victory in Busto Arsizio, Italy last March 12. Villegas etched her name in history with a resounding 5-0 triumph over Bulgaria's Zlatislava Chukanova in the 50kg quarterfinals."

In an act of appreciation and recognition, Tacloban City Mayor Alfred Romualdez recently welcomed Aira in his office to honor her remarkable feat in the world’s highest sports fest.

In the courtesy call, Villegas recounted her Olympic journey that started in 2010 through the Tacloban LGU's Summer Sports Clinic before ascending to be one of the national athletes in 2012.

In an interview with CIO News team, Villegas revealed that her older brother, Romnick, a boxer himself, inspired her inclination to boxing.

The CIO of Tacloban confirmed that Aira is the first Filipina boxer to qualify for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, followed by Tokyo Olympics Silver medalist, Nesthy Petecio.

Meanwhile, Mayor Romualdez assured Villegas of his steadfast support, pledging to provide all necessary assistance needed in her quest to bring home an Olympic medal for Tacloban City.
