The Tacloban City Traffic Operations Management Enforcement and Control Office is now banning the use of nutshell helmets for motorcycle riders.
After a series of motorcycle accidents in Tacloban City, the city’s Traffic Operations Management Enforcement and Control Office (TOMECO) has now imposed a strict implementation of rules regarding the usage of helmets.
Since April 15, personnel from TOMECO and the Tacloban City Police Office (TCPO) have been on the streets to remind motorists to use the proper prescribed helmet while riding motorcycles.
Nutshell helmets, which are commonly used by bicycle and skateboard riders, are now prohibited as it does not provide enough protection to the wearer’s head in case of an accident.
Instead, the city government has encouraged the use of full-face visor helmets.
"Nagpapahinumdom kita ha aton mga motorista nga magsul-ot hin prescribe helmet para maiwasan an kamatayon tungod han pagka disgrasya,” TOMECO said in its Facebook page.
Republic Act No. 10054 (Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009) strictly regulates the type of helmets motorcycle riders can use.
Under the law, motorcycle helmets must bear a Philippine Standard (PS) mark or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) of the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS) and complies with the standards set by the BPS. (JKA/With report from PNA)
