Some 107 volcanic earthquakes were recorded over the past 24-hour observation period at the Taal Volcano.

RESIDENTS are in alert mode once again after Taal Volcano’s main crater has resumed degassing of steam-rich plume after a pause of 16 days.

In a report today, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) noted that sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission averaged 3,849 tonnes/day, last measured on August 9.

Some 107 volcanic earthquakes were recorded over the past 24-hour observation period.

“Activity at the main crater was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake which generated plumes 3,000 meters tall that drifted to the general north,” the agency added.
“Based on ground deformation parameters from electronic tilt, continuous GPS and InSAR monitoring, Taal Volcano Island has begun deflating in April 2021 while the Taal region continues to undergo very slow extension since 2020.”

Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, which means that sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within and around the volcano island.

Residents in the area are still forbidden from entering the volcano’s permanent danger zone, as well as any activity within the Taal Lake.
