Surfers conquer Surf City Borongan 2023

BORONGAN CITY — Surfers hailing from Siargao, La Union, Vigan, and Borongan City claimed top honors at the 2023 Surf City Borongan Masters, held as the fourth leg of the esteemed NextGen Pilipinas Surfing Tour.

Rogelio Esquivel Jr. of La Union secured victory in the Men’s Open Longboard category, while Vea Estralado of Sorsogon triumphed in the Women’s Open Shortboard division.


Additionally, Mara Lopez of La Union emerged victorious in both the Junior Girls Shortboard and Junior Girls Longboard categories. Robert Magaluna of Siargao dominated the Men’s Open Shortboard, with Toby Espejon of Siargao securing the Junior Boys Shortboard title.


Ashlee Lopez of La Union clinched success in the Women’s Open Longboard category, while Jeiru Aribuabo of Vigan triumphed in the Junior Boys Longboard division. Completing the list of winners, Carlos Aga Jr. of Borongan City emerged victorious in the Master’s category.


The competition, which ran from November 24 to December 2, saw a total of 97 surfers from various provinces, including Aurora, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Eastern Samar, Ilocos Sur, Leyte, La Union, Northern Samar, Palawan, Sorsogon, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Zambales, showcasing their skills and talents.


Borongan's local government unit has been actively attracting surfing enthusiasts since 2019, contributing significantly to increased tourism and economic development within the city and the broader Eastern Visayas region.


The 4th leg of the NextGen Pilipinas Surfing Nationals, sanctioned by the United Philippine Surfing Association, received sponsorship from several entities, including the City Government of Borongan, Tingog Partylist, Department of Tourism (DOT)-Eastern Visayas, Eastern Samar Provincial Government, the Lone Congressional District of Eastern Samar, 4Ps Partylist, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT).
