One man's alleged suicidal act led to hundreds of residents left without homes after a fire broke out in Barangay Malamig, Biñan City, Laguna last June 10.
The fire was first reported by residents inside a residential compound in Barangay Malamig at around 2:56 a.m.
The fire was finally put out at around 3:46 later that morning.
The Biñan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) later reported a single casualty, a burned body that was recovered from the fire scene.
"During the operation, one casualty was reported and was allegedly involved in a suicidal act related to the incident," the CDRRMO said in its social media page.
While the CDRRMO and the Biñan City police declined to provide further details, some residents alleged that the casualty was a boarder who set himself on fire in an act of suicide.
Meanwhile, some 40 families, corresponding to 144 individuals, were evacuated to the Malamig Training Center, where they received relief packs from the local government.
Authorities are still investigating the possible motive of the alleged suicide, as well as the amount of damages that resulted from the fire.
