Philippine showbiz’s notable actors Nora Aunor, Christopher de Leon, Piolo Pascual, and Vilma Santos were chosen as the recipients of the Dekada Awards in this year’s edition of the PMPC Star Awards for Movies.

Now on its 40th year, the award-giving body bestowed the recognition on the four icons based on the number of acting awards they have won from the PMPC over the past 40 years.

In his speech prior to the program, current PMPC President Rodel Fernando emphasized that the body will continue to honor deserving individuals in Philippine cinema despite the many challenges faced by the club, including the past health pandemic which affected many lives and industries globally.

"We will not stop giving recognitions because you [the movie industry] is our foundation. PMPC is strong because of the support of the actors, producers, directors, all the creators, and workers of Philippine Film. So, on the fourth decade of Star Awards for Movies, we will continue the tradition of giving awards to further inspire the industry," Fernando said.

And, thus the grand tribute held for them at the Henry Lee Theater at Ateneo de Manila University.

Aside from the Dekada Awards, the star-studded affair also presented the Lifetime Achievement Awards to veteran actress Liza Lorena and top movie producer Vic del Rosario Jr.

Lorena was honored with the Nora Aunor Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award with no less than Aunor presenting it.

The star-maker who is popularly called Boss Vic in the industry, Del Rosario received the Ulirang Alagad ng Pelikula sa Likod ng Kamera Lifetime Achievement Award with actors-turned public servants Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. and his wife, Rep. Lani Mercado, presenting the special award.

Meanwhile, Sen. Bong received the Darling of the Press award, “the first in my 50 years in the entertainment industry,” he said appreciatively.

More surprises and many firsts

A first in the history of the Star Awards for Movies, three movie queens -- Superstar and National Artist Nora Aunor, Diamond Star Maricel Soriano, and Star for All Seasons Vilma Santos shared the Movie Actress of the Year citation.

Yes, it was a triple tie for Soriano, Santos, and Aunor for the Best Actress plum for their performances in the films "In His Mother's Eyes," "When I Met You in Tokyo," and "Pieta," respectively.

Aunor and Soriano turned emotional as they shared the center stage. They hugged and shared some banters as they received their award. Santos was visibly absent due to health concerns.

Kapuso Royalties Dingdong Dantes and Alden Richards also shared the center stage as they tied in the Movie Actor of the Year award for their movies “Rewind” and “Five Breakups and a Romance.”

Dantes and his beauteous wife, Marian Rivera, were named Takilya King and Queen for breaking the all-time highest earning record in Philippine cinema for Rewind.

Meanwhile, Richards, who was also one the awards night’s hosts, together with Robi Domingo, Bianca Umali, and Aiko Melendez, received the Movie Loveteam of the Year for his screen partnership with Julia Montes.

Other notable winners of the night include JC Santos and LA Santos, who clinched the awards for Movie Supporting Actor of the Year for their roles in "Mallari" and "In His Mother's Eyes", respectively.

But it was "Mallari" which swept multiple awards, including Movie of the Year, Movie Ensemble Acting of the Year, Movie Editor of the Year, Movie Sound Engineer of the Year, and Movie Theme Song of the Year, showcasing the film's excellence in various aspects of filmmaking.

Veteran columnist and former PMPC President Ronald Constantino was honored with the Ethel Ramos Dean's Lister Award for his great contribution to the club and to the industry. His friend and former Tempo entertainment editor, Nestor Cuartero, accepted the award.

Darren Espanto's magnificent opening number with the Manoeuvres was well-applauded. Ditto with the finale song number and showdown of singing champs Tawag ng Tanghalan Season 3 grand champion Laine Duran, The Voice Kids Season 1 grand champion Lyca Gairanod, Bida Next grand winner Carren Eistrup, and Pinoy Pop Superstar season 1 grand champion Jonah.

What a way to celebrate! It was made possible by Airtime Marketing headed by Tess Celestino-Howard under the direction of Eric Quizon.

The entirety of the awards night will be aired on A2Z on July 27, 2024, at 10:30 p.m.
