The Samar State University (SSU), in cooperation with the local government of Daram, conducted a two-day training program on fisheries and related concerns from April 22 to 23, 2025, at the Municipal Training Center in Daram, Samar.
The event, titled "Values Formation and Entrepreneurial Mindset Training," is part of the ongoing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between SSU and LGU Daram on the Blue Economy initiative. This program aims to support and improve the livelihoods of those in the fisheries sector by fostering values formation, resilience, and entrepreneurial skills.
The training included various sessions and activities led by notable speakers from SSU. Mr. Jasper Alegro, Faculty Researcher from SSU-SAGWAN, conducted discussions on gender roles within fisheries. Ms. Mary Jane Cinco, Psychology Faculty and Gender and Development (GAD) Coordinator, along with Ms. Jevah Mae V. Piamonte, addressed key topics like growth mindset and self-efficacy. Following each session, participants actively engaged in workshops designed to encourage reflection and sharing.
As part of the training, a baseline assessment on entrepreneurial skills was facilitated by staff from SSU’s Center for Lifelong Learning (CeLL). Fisherfolk and processors from Brgy. Ubo, Brgy. Pondang, Brgy. Yangta, and various Poblacion areas joined the first batch of the program. Another session for additional participants is scheduled for April 29 to 30, 2025.
Through this initiative, SSU and LGU Daram aim to provide practical tools and knowledge that can strengthen the fisheries sector, especially in communities heavily reliant on coastal livelihoods. It underscores the importance of collaboration between academic institutions and local government in addressing social and economic challenges.
The program serves as a stepping stone toward further empowering these communities, ensuring they are equipped to adapt and grow in an evolving economic landscape. It highlights the commitment of both organizations to the shared goal of fostering sustainable development through education and skill-building opportunities. This training is a crucial element in the broader vision for community growth and resilience.
