Eastern Visayas has been swamped with the sudden influx of assistance from the government when there is no calamity nor deluge to boot!

These are earmarked for rebuilding and revitalizing the region's economy and infrastructure that had been coming in staggering amounts since the installation of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. in June 2022.

This influx of funds has been a welcome development for the province of Leyte which has faced numerous challenges since the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 and, more recently, the Covid-19 pandemic.

Electoral Stronghold

Under the Marcos administration, Leyte has received an estimated P13.4 billion in aid, with a significant portion allocated for infrastructure development, disaster response, and social welfare programs.

For the locals, this is a testament to the President's commitment to addressing the needs of his home province, which is his birthplace and electoral stronghold.

One of the primary areas that has benefited from the government's largesse is infrastructure development.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has awarded several projects to Leyte, including the construction of new roads, bridges, and flood control systems.

These projects are expected to improve connectivity and accessibility within the province, as well as reduce the risk of flooding and damage caused by natural disasters.

Social Welfare & Agriculture

The public had also noticed the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has also been more generous of social welfare programs in Leyte, including cash assistance for poor families and individuals affected by disasters.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has also played a significant role in supporting farmers and fishermen in Leyte. The agency has provided billions in agricultural assistance, including loans and subsidies for rice farmers and fisheries projects.

This has helped to boost agricultural production and income for rural communities, which are critical to the province's economic growth.

Efficient Delivery

While these figures are impressive, there are concerns about the effectiveness of these aid programs and their distribution mechanisms.

Some critics argue that corruption and bureaucratic red tape may be hindering the efficient delivery of aid to those who need it most.

Others have questioned the allocation of funds, citing concerns about overemphasis on infrastructure projects at the expense of social services and community development initiatives.

Despite these concerns, it is undeniable that Leyte has received significant government support under President Marcos Jr.'s presidency.

Transparency

As the province continues to recover from past disasters and navigate the challenges posed by climate change, it is crucial that these aid programs are implemented transparently and effectively to ensure that they benefit those who need them most.

For locals, Leyte's experience under President Marcos Jr.'s presidency serves as a testament to the importance of government support for disaster-affected areas.

While challenges remain, it is clear that the province has received a significant boost from consecutive government aid packages aimed at rebuilding its economy, infrastructure, and social services.

As the country continues to face natural disasters and economic challenges, it is essential that future aid packages are designed with transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in mind.
