The Philippine Army is in mourning following the tragic death of a soldier who was engaged in military operations targeting communist insurgents amid the severe impact of Tropical Storm Kristine, internationally referred to as Trami, in Paranas, Samar.

On Thursday afternoon, October 24, the body of Private Boyet Bugtong was recovered, just a day after he was swept away by rising floodwaters in Anagasi village.

Capt. Jefferson Mariano, spokesperson for the 8th Infantry Division, expressed the Army’s sorrow during a phone interview on Friday, stating, “We are saddened by his demise as he died in the line of duty. He was one of the soldiers deployed to the area to conduct focused military operations since there were recent sightings of rebels in the area.”

While there was a military focus on combating insurgents, the soldiers were also tasked with assisting local residents who were heavily impacted by the severe flooding caused by the storm.

Samar province, a part of the Eastern Visayas region, faced significant devastation during the wrath of Kristine.

The storm brought powerful winds and extensive flooding, affecting over 528,000 individuals spread across 717 villages in the region as it made its way through this area earlier in the week.

The dual responsibilities of the troops in both military operations and humanitarian assistance highlight the challenges faced by the Philippine Army during natural disasters.

They not only deal with threats from insurgents but also step in to alleviate the suffering caused by such calamities.

The loss of Private Bugtong serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by military personnel in the line of duty, especially during times of crisis when both security and community support are paramount.

His dedication to service and the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country reflect the bravery and commitment of the soldiers working in perilous conditions.

As recovery efforts continue in Samar, the Philippine Army will undoubtedly carry on with its mission, grappling with the balance between military duties and the pressing needs of civilian populations affected by disasters.

The resilience of both the army and the communities impacted by Tropical Storm Kristine will be crucial as they navigate the aftermath of this tragic event and work towards rebuilding their lives in the face of adversity.

The spirit of solidarity among the troops and civilians alike will play a significant role as they address the multifaceted challenges presented by natural disasters and insurgent activities.
