Life has taken a brighter turn for residents of Barangay Jose Roño following the completion of a ₱1.6-million renewable energy electrification project that now provides reliable, sustainable electricity to over 480 residents.
The project introduced a 6kW solar-powered hybrid system, 10 units of 500W solar floodlights, and 20 solar-powered streetlights.
These upgrades have significantly improved living conditions in the barangay, especially during evening hours when residents once relied on gas lamps, battery-operated lights, or unstable electric service.
“This project really changed things for us,” said Barangay Captain Claudio Gabiana Jr.
“We used to pay ₱5,000 or more in electricity bills. Now it sometimes goes as low as ₱76. And the barangay hall can finally operate smoothly with computers, radios, and CCTVs running even during power outages.”
Before the installation, residents dealt with frequent brownouts, dark and unsafe streets, and costly electricity that disrupted daily routines.
Children struggled to study at night, and public areas became nearly unusable after sunset.
Today, those challenges have been greatly reduced.
The new solar-powered street lights ensure safer streets after dark, while the barangay hall now offers free Wi-Fi, helping students and residents stay connected and informed.
“It’s a big help,” added Barangay Secretary Jezeil Mabanan.
“Even during brownouts, we still have light outside. And our electric bill now stays around ₱300 or less most months.”
Students, in particular, are benefiting from the changes.
“They come out here to study in the evenings,” said Gabiana. “Before, they had to deal with candles or dim lamps. Now they can focus better.”
The project was implemented to support remote and underserved communities and improve access to essential services.
While the benefits are clear, local officials are also planning ahead for sustainability.
Solar panels and equipment may require maintenance or replacement in the coming years, especially after exposure to natural wear and tear or disasters.
Budget planning for repairs and upkeep is already being considered.
For Barangay Jose Roño, this project is more than a technical upgrade—it’s a turning point.
With safer streets, reduced costs, and access to modern tools and connectivity, residents now have more opportunities to learn, work, and thrive.
