Social workers are unsung heroes who have the biggest heart of gold.

In an already challenging life, with predicaments occasionally, social workers are like manna from heaven for people who feel hopeless and helpless.

While we all think that our support systems are limited to family and friends, sometimes workmates or cliques we strongly feel we belong to, some find comfort and rely on support—in all aspects—from social workers. Social workers assist people in coping with life's challenges, raising awareness in addressing their needs and connecting them to solution-based programs and services.

Consider the countless lives touched by social workers every day. Victims of crime and abuse seeking justice, children from foster care looking to be adopted to safe and stable homes, individuals battling with drug and alcohol addiction navigating their way to recovery, neglected elderly yearning to receive the care and respect they deserve, and the entirety of the community needing emergency relief in times of disaster or crisis.

The role of social workers has changed over the years and has adapted to the differing needs of people in the community. Normally what should be within working hours has been extended not only until overtime or weekends, but in the wee hours or even amid a filed leave or official business. And what should be within office premises has encompassed calls, chats, and SMS 24/7. The line between official and personal transactions has become hard to define simply because social workers have empathy at the core of their souls.

The profound impact of social workers extends beyond the individuals and families they assist, despite difficult and stressful if not at all conducive working conditions. Their work strengthens communities, reduces societal inequalities, and contributes to a more just and compassionate society.

For social workers, it is a disservice to turn a blind eye to injustice, suffering, and desperation. With what the government can, and is unable and limited to provide, they use their means and resources to help those in need. They extend their services beyond office hours and have to constantly adjust to the schedule of their disadvantaged clients due to financial constraints.

Some even get too attached and absorb the problems of their clients notwithstanding that it also affects their mood and their mental health and well-being. Perhaps it is inevitable because when you are a social worker, you do not just have the notion that you need to serve others but desperately want to save others.

Social workers are not just the backbone of our social support systems, they are the heart warmers and life changers of people who feel insignificant, violated, deprived, abandoned, and miserable. They are the ones who step in, step up, and empower people to rebuild their lives, regain their dignity, and find hope in the face of adversity.

Tirelessly advocating for the vulnerable and marginalized, social workers are ordinary people who work extraordinarily. Their superpowers include intervention, advocacy, and empowerment of communities by encouraging individuals to take an active role in shaping social services for the better of all.

Social workers embody the values of empathy, integrity, and commitment to social justice and public service. They subtly remind us that we are all interconnected—in helping others, we are helping ourselves; in saving the lives of others, our lives are changed.
