With the expected onset of the dry season in the coming weeks, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) continues with its drive to protect Lagunenses from the worst effects of flooding.

This, as the conglomerate’s Better Rivers PH initiatives report over half a million metric tons of silt and waste removed from three major river systems in the province.

Better Rivers PH is currently focusing its efforts at the Landayan River in San Pedro City, Laguna, where flooding has become part of everyday life for residents during the rainy season.

In an update posted on its social media page, Better Rivers PH said it has cleared a 0.78-kilometer stretch of the Landayan River.

This is the equivalent of 74,826 metric tons (MT) of silt and waste removed from the river since cleanup was started last year.

Meanwhile, SMC has also conducted maintenance cleanups at the Biñan and San Isidro (San Pedro City) rivers, there 107,192 MT of waste material were dredged from these two rivers.

Better Rivers PH added that it has removed a total of 558,717 MT of silt and waste from the Biñan, San Isidro and Tunasan rivers since it started its dredging operations in 2023.

The initiative is part of a wider corporate social responsibility (CSR) program of SMC to deliver long-term solutions to the perennial problem of flooding in Metro Manila and nearby areas.

Last year, SMC Chairman Ramon Ang forged an agreement with Laguna Governor Sol Aragones to expand its program of dredging other major rivers in the province, easing the provincial government’s burden in resolving the long-standing problem of flooding in communities near Laguna de Bay.
