One of the hurdles in improving the healthcare sector in many parts of the Philippines is not only the lack of adequate facilities but the lack of talented personnel to man them.
"Brain drain" has been a serious issue in the country's health care system, with many medical graduates opting to go overseas due to higher pay.
With the construction of the College of Medicine Building at the Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) in Lucban, Quezon, provincial officials led by incumbent 4th district representative and Governor-elect Angelina "Helen" Tan hopes to solve this problem of lack of trained personnel for the province's expanding healthcare network.
Once completed, the College of Medicine at the SLSU will become the first state university in the entire Calabarzon region that will offer a Doctor of Medicine program.
This project has been one of the priorities of Governor-elect Tan, who has placed healthcare as one of her top agendas during her term as congresswoman.
The new College of Medicine Building started construction work today (May 20), after the Department of Public Works of Highways (DPWH) - Lucban office approved a Notice to Proceed for the project.
The building will be located at what was once the a parking lot in front of the University Library of SLSU, prompting university officials to issue a directive Thursday regarding the construction of the new facility.
