Independence Day is a day of pride and reflection for Filipinos, and this year, it holds special significance for the people of Iloilo.
The province of Iloilo will participate in the 126th Independence Day parade in Manila on June 12. This year, Iloilo's contribution to the parade will highlight the "Cry of Santa Barbara and Establishment of the Federal State of the Visayas" with a special float.
“This is historic for us because this is the first time that we were invited to join the parade at the national level,” Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. shared in a recent interview.
Defensor emphasized how proud and grateful the province feels to be one of the few local government units (LGUs) selected to be part of this national celebration.
Ilonggo Hero
The "Cry of Santa Barbara" is a significant event in the history of Iloilo and the Philippines. It marks the formal inauguration of the Revolutionary Government in the Visayas, led by the brave Ilonggo hero, General Martin Delgado.
This event, held on November 17, 1898, was also the first time the Philippine flag was raised outside of Luzon. This act of defiance and unity against the Spanish colonizers is a moment of great pride for Ilonggos and a symbol of their contribution to the country's independence.
Santa Barbara tourism officer Irene Magallon explained, “That only signifies how important the historic event that took place in Sta. Barbara in 1898. We will carry this experience through our lifetime.”
Other Uprisings
Magallon further mentioned the series of meetings and uprisings across Visayas, including the Cry of Jelicuon in New Lucena, Cry of Lincud in Dingle, the 19 Martyrs of Aklan, and the Battle of Balisong in Capiz. These events show the collective efforts and sacrifices of the Visayans in the fight for freedom.
For many Ilonggos, Independence Day is not just a holiday. It is a time to remember and honor the bravery of those who fought for freedom. This year, participating in the national parade allows Iloilo to share its rich history and contributions with the rest of the country.
The float showcasing the "Cry of Santa Barbara" will remind everyone of the courage and determination of the Ilonggos.
Pride of Ilonggos
Governor Defensor, Vice Gov. Christine Garin, and other officials will lead the Iloilo delegation in Manila. Their participation signifies not only the importance of the event but also the pride of every Ilonggo.
As we celebrate Independence Day, let us remember the words of General Martin Delgado: “Our freedom was not given to us; it was earned through the blood and sacrifices of our forefathers.” This quote reminds us of the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors and the importance of preserving and cherishing our freedom.
Independence Day is a day for Ilonggos to reflect on their history, celebrate their culture, and look forward to a future where the values of bravery, unity, and freedom continue to thrive. This celebration is a tribute to the enduring spirit of the Ilonggos and a reminder of their significant role in the history of the Philippines.
