SIGMA, Capiz — The saga of the Sigma Cemetery is nearing its conclusion. Mayor Dante Rizal Eslabon has finally ordered the construction to resume after it had been halted, much to the relief of many residents.

This decision came after a productive dialogue with the contractor, who agreed to pay a fine for damages and delays. But beyond the construction dust lies a story of political rivalry and community impact.

The public cemetery project, which carries a price tag of P42 million, was initiated by the previous administration.

Significant Roadblock

Yet, under the leadership of Mayor Eslabon, it hit a significant roadblock.

The land on which the cemetery is being built hadn't been officially transferred to the municipal government, a crucial oversight that had the potential to derail the project entirely.

Municipal engineer Engr. Lyndon Jarencio pointed fingers at the previous administration for this oversight.

According to him, if the previous leaders had secured the lot title and the necessary permits from the Housing Land Use Regulatory Board, the cemetery could have started generating revenue through pre-sales of plots.

Instead, the Eslabon administration inherited a mess, leaving the town at risk of further financial losses.

A Strategic One

Mayor Eslabon's move to resume construction is more than just an administrative decision; it's a strategic one.

The completion of the cemetery not only averts further financial waste but also potentially stabilizes his political standing. In small towns like Sigma, public works can heavily influence political fortunes, and Eslabon seems to be playing his cards right.

The community impact of finally having a functional public cemetery cannot be overstated.

For many families, this means having a dignified place to lay their loved ones to rest, without the burden of excessive costs associated with private cemeteries.

It's a matter of public service that hits close to home for many Sigma residents.

Blunders Exposed

On the political front, this move could either bridge gaps or widen rifts.

The previous administration's blunders are now glaringly exposed, providing Eslabon with a chance to showcase his problem-solving capabilities.

However, it also sets the stage for potential friction, as critics may argue the delay in resuming construction could have been avoided altogether with better initial planning.

As the cemetery project inches towards completion, Mayor Eslabon's administration is still tangled in the bureaucratic red tape of processing the lot titling.

Despite this, the community's anticipation grows, with hopes that by next month, Sigma will finally have its much-needed public cemetery.

In the end, the Sigma Cemetery saga is a classic tale of local politics and governance.

It's a reminder that in the realm of public service, the stakes are often as personal as they are political, and the road to progress is frequently paved with challenges that require both leadership and a bit of negotiation.
