The spectacle that we are now seeing in Congress as more and more sordid details unfold on the billions wasted on flood-control projects is nothing more than a case of the absurdity that has become part of our politics.

Absurd, because the very people who profited from the “power of the purse” invested in them by law are now the ones claiming to have the high moral ground to investigate this latest episode of unbelievable graft and corruption in our government.

There are already calls by concerned sectors and the public for these legislators to inhibit from investigating the massive collusion between corrupt government officials and contractors to steal millions intended for flood-control. And the reason is simple enough: the people no longer have trust in their supposed “representatives” to dig out the root causes of corruption in our government now that they are the ones suspected of perpetuating it.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.’s decision to launch an independent fact-finding commission to investigate and find out the culprits responsible for this wholesale robbery, unfortunately, does not inspire confidence in his sincerity to stamp out corruption, either.

If our government officials still have any shame and delicadeza left, the least they can do is to allow themselves to be placed under scrutiny by a truly independent commission, one that will not be linked to any politician or political organization.

Such an idea, lamentably, sounds far-fetched in the context of Philippine politics. But it’s either that – or we may once again face the wrath of an angry populace, such as what had happened in Indonesia in the past weeks.

As the saying goes, “those who make peaceful revolutions impossible make violent revolutions inevitable.”
