If it’s Shaina Magdayao, it must be quality.

That is why the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France never ceases to invite her to lend glamor and substance to the event.

Coming from a pool of Filipino talents, Shaina was a hit again at the ongoing La Croissette fest.

Magdayao is one of the members of the Philippine delegation to represent the country at the Cannes Directors Fortnight’s Directors Factory.

Her short film “Walay Balay,” a narrative on a mother-daughter plight after being displaced from the tumultuous Marawi City siege, directed by Filipino filmmaker Eve Baswel and Malaysian film artist Gogularaajan Rajendran, was chosen by the Directors Factory from the development to the completion of the project held in Mindanao.

This is Shaina’s second wind at the French Riveira.

“Truly an honor to be part of this very special experience,” noted Magdayao in her Instagram account.

“A privilege to represent the country…Someone pinch me please”” she teased.

This is the first time that the country was chosen by Cannes’ Directors Factory to explore, develop and assist Filipinos as well as Southeast Asian filmmakers to participate in an annual mentoring on deserving moviemakers.

A representative Cannes filmmaker was assigned to a Filipino and Southeast Asian director for intensified theoretical and practical filmmaking education.

The section started in 2013 with Taiwan as its first host of the Cannes project.

At the 2024 Cannes, the Directors Fortnight’s Directors Factory was focused on the Philippines where four short films were screened.

The other Filipino titles were “Silig” by Arvin Belarmino, “Cold Cut” by Don Josephus Rafael Eblahan and “Nightbirds” by Maria Estela Paiso.
