Public panics as another quake shakes Leyte anew.
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake last Friday, May 3, at 6:16 pm hit the area.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the tectonic earthquake occured just 36 kilometers northeast of Abuyog, Leyte at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Intensity V quake was felt in areas of Abuyog, Burauen, Dulag, La Paz, MacArthur, Mahaplag, Tabontabon, and Tolosa, Leyte. Similar intensity was also felt in Hinunangan, Hinundayan, and Silago in Southern Leyte.
Meanwhile, two people were reported injured as reported by the Dulag Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Office.
A 26-year-old pregnant woman reportedly fainted and fell from a flight of stairs in a panic while another 27-year-old female allegedly jumped from the second floor of a business establishment and sustained a foot injury. No other major incidents were reported in other areas.
No tsunami alert was raised but residents along the coastal communities in Dulag were evacuated. They were later permitted to return to their respective homes at around 7:30 pm.
The Big One
Days just after the shake, a moderate magnitude of 3.7 earthquake occurred in the Philippine Sea near Leyte.
On Tuesday, May 7, PHIVOLCS recorded the quake at a shallow depth of one kilometer and was not reportedly felt in the nearby communities.
Since May 3, seven more earthquakes were recorded in Eastern Visayas as of this writing.
Although barely felt, locals are still alarmed that this may trigger more and stronger earthquakes in the future.
Speculations are rife on the possible occurence of "the big one" in Region 8.
