As much as possible, don’t bring firearms at the airport – but if you have to, make sure they’re properly documented.

That was the bitter lesson a provincial-bound septuagenarian learned after he was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 when he tried to deposit his firearms, after authorities found that the serial numbers did not match the documents he provided.

According to reports from the Aviation Security Unit of the Philippine National Police, the incident took place on Tuesday, April 2.

The passenger, who was not identified by authorities, reportedly surrendered a .22 Ruger pistol with a magazine, a .45 Thompson pistol with three magazines, and 20 rounds of ammunition at the firearms booth in Terminal 3 before departure.

Despite the passenger's honest act, the police said he violated the law because his Permit to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence (PTCFOR) appeared to be tampered with.

The suspect is now being held at the NAIA Police Station 3 for proper handling and filing of the case.

Aviation Security Group Director PBGen Christopher N. Abrahano praised the airport's elite police unit "for its persistent effort to maintain aviation security and safety."
