Christianity is once again set to commemorate this week one of the main tenets of their faith: that Jesus Christ, Son of God, gave his life on the cross to save humanity from sin.

Selflessness - that is one of the main lessons taught to every Christian during Holy Week. That the Son of God himself willingly sacrificed himself for the salvation of mankind is a powerful statement in a world that is increasingly becoming individualistic and self-centered.

And with the midterm elections a less than a month away, let us include in our reflections and meditations how we can express our selflessness when we finally go to the polls on May 12?

Consider the factors we apply in choosing our candidates for national and local positions.

Do we choose him or her because of "utang na loob" or debt of gratitude we owe to them? Do we choose them because they have done personal favors for us? Do we choose them because their ideologies (and prejudices) fit with our own beliefs and prejudices?

If these factors are what makes us choose the people who will lead our country, aren't we already displaying selfishness?

How about changing these statements into something like these?

I will vote for this or that candidate because I believe he or she is the most qualified, most capable and most credible for that post.

I will vote for this or that candidate, because I believe he or she will promote the greater welfare of the majority of Filipinos - not just me or my family.

I will vote for this or that candidate, because I see beyond my own prejudices and beliefs and understand that no candidate will fit into everyone's own beliefs.

If, on May 12, we set aside our own selfish factors and instead think of the greater welfare of ALL Filipinos in casting our votes, then we can be really assured that change will not just become a banal, cliche byword but become an actual and active way of life.
