DOTr will be announcing several “latest developments” on the Common Station this March.
THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) has teased the completion of the Unified Grand Central Station–also called the Common Station–saying to wait for new developments this month.
“The 13,700-square meter concourse area in North EDSA, Quezon City will provide seamless commuting experience to commuters,” DOTr writes.
Once completed, the station is expected to serve about 478,000 passengers daily.
Located in North Avenue, the Common Station will serve as an interconnecting terminal for the LRT-1, the MRT-3, the under-construction MRT-7, and the Metro Manila Subway.
Netizens, however, noticed that the infrastructure no longer resembles the artist perspective released by the agency in 2017.
Instead of open space, there is now a building on the corner of EDSA and North Avenue where the MRT-7 should meet with LRT-1 and LRT-2. For now, the agency is calling it Area B or atrium.
DOTr announced Area B to be 100% completed last March 2021 and they have accelerated construction of the rest of the project.
Also instead of a transparent wavy roof for the elevated station of both LRT-1 and LRT-2, single-curved steel beams have been placed above the tracks of LRT-1 with galvanized steel roofing.
Construction was initially slated for December 2021 but was pushed back indefinitely possibly due to the multiple lockdowns last year brought by the Delta Covid-19 variant.
Transportation Secretary Art Tugade has not announced a new completion schedule nor has the agency released new designs of the Common Station for the public to see.
