Come January, 2025, or nine months from now, the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) will host the prestigious Subic International Marathon (SIM) 2025.

Dubbed as “I Run For My Heroes”, the commemorative run will be held in honor of the Special Action Force (SAF) 44 heroes who sacrificed their lives in Maguindanao while neutralizing Malaysian terrorist and bomb-maker Zulkifli Abdhir and other Malaysian terrorists or high-ranking members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) back in 2015.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño said it brings him "great pleasure to welcome all to this exciting kick-off event. We are thrilled to be hosting the Subic International Marathon and to play a part in bringing this inspiring initiative to life within our community,”

At the launching ceremony of the sports event held at the Riviera Hotel recently, Aliño also recognized the bravery of the SAF 44 heroes for sacrificing their lives to help ensure national security against terrorism.

As the event is expected to draw around 5,000 runners from all walks of life, organizers said that the SIM would become “the Boston Marathon of the Subic Bay Freeport.”

SIM Director and SAF Director Gen. Bernie Banac said the marathon event captures the essence of the motivation and inspiration behind participating in the SIM 2025.

Participants have their own personal heroes, whether they be family members, friends or admired figures, who have influenced and shaped their lives,” Banac said.

“By running for their heroes, participants channel their admiration, gratitude, and respect into their running journey, turning each step into a tribute to those who have made a difference."

Last February, the Asia Swimming Federation conducted held its annual continental event with more than 1,200 participants aged 11 to 18 competing in four different disciplines swimming, diving, artistic swimming and water polo. The competition was held at New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac from Feb. 26 to 29.

Indeed, Central Luzon and the Subic Freeport are fast becoming the regional sports hub of the country.
