One problem local government units (LGUs) face after calamities such as floods is the issue of removing and storing vehicles that were damaged by floodwaters along the roads.
It is in this regard that the city government of Santa Rosa, Laguna recently forged an agreement with one of the largest “damaged-car” traders in Japan for the proper removal of vehicles that were affected by natural disasters.
During the LGU’s recent visit to Saitama, Japan, Santa Rosa City Mayor Arlene Arcillas signed a “Master Agreement for Services on Affected-Vehicle Removal in times of Disaster” with TAU Corporation, a Japanese firm specializing in buying and selling damaged and scrapped vehicles.
Under the agreement, TAU Corporation will provide assistance to the LGU to remove parked cars that were damaged during heavy flooding from major thoroughfares in Santa Rosa City, as well as in the storage and disposal of such vehicles.
“We dispose of the vehicles appropriately through ‘car triage,’ which selects the most appropriate disposal method according to the damage condition,” TAU Corporation CEO Akitaka Miyamoto explained.
“This process helps to realize a recycling-oriented society and curb global warming,” he added.
On the other hand, Arcillas highlighted the importance of learning from Japanese technology and expertise in disaster risk reduction and management.
“I firmly believe that entering into this agreement is a prudent choice. Japan has long been recognized for its exemplary disaster resilience and rapid recovery mechanisms. It has faced and overcome countless natural disasters with remarkable speed and efficiency. Their ability to rebuild stronger communities and develop technologies that set a global standard for disaster management is truly inspiring and worth emulating,” she said in a statement.
