For decades, Santa Rosa City has led the province of Laguna in spearheading economic progress. Now it's ready to lead in becoming one of the "smart cities" in the province.

Last Tuesday, March 4, Santa Rosa City Mayor Arlene Arcillas signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Director Emelita Bagsit, Laguna Provincial Science and Technology Office Director Agnes Morales, and other local officials.

The MOA aims to implement the "Innovation, Science and Technology for Development and Smart and Sustainable Communities Program" and the "Support Initiative for the Smart City Certification" in Santa Rosa City.

In 2023, the city government also partnered with DOST to implement the Innovation, Science and Technology for Accelerating Regional Technology-Based Development (iSTART), which according to the local government led to better technological planning and development among its local department.

The LGU now aims to become the first city in Southeast Asia to receive the Smart City Certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI), the national standards body of the United Kingdom, under the BSI Kitemark Certification.

"Ang Smart City Certification ay isang pandaigdigang pagkilala na ibinibigay sa mga lungsod na nagpapatupad ng new technology, data-driven governance, at sustainable urban development. Sa tulong ng sertipikasyong ito, mas mapapahusay pa ang serbisyo publiko, imprastraktura, at kalidad ng buhay ng mga residente ng Santa Rosa," the LGU explained in its social media page.
