The local government of San Pedro City, Laguna had to call a suppliers meeting in order to immediately warn suppliers of the city against scammers seeking solicitations using the name of Mayor Art Mercado.
“Nakarating sa amin na may tumatawag using the name of the mayor, pangalan mismo ni Mayor Art Mercado, tapos may picture pa whether Facebook or Viber na nanghihingi daw ng either solicitation or financial support,” City Administrator Atty. Henry Salazar told those who attended the meeting Tuesday, June 18.
“Sabihin ko lang sa inyo na hindi gagawin ni mayor 'yon kaya in case may mareceive kayo na message or call or text purporting our city mayor e hindi po niya gagawin yon,” he added.
According to Salazar, they were informed by a supplier that someone was using the name of the mayor to seek solicitation or sponsorship.
“Naalarm kami kasi talagang brazen, ginamit pa talaga pangalan ni mayor at pag tinawagan mo sumasagot at kinakausap supplier na siya si Mayor Art.”
This was how the supplier got suspicious when they noticed the accent was a bit different than Mercado.
The city government warned the public to be cautious and report such scams to authorities.
