For this year’s celebration of the much-anticipated Sampaguita Festival, local officials in San Pedro City, Laguna promise a “packed” lineup of events that will celebrate not only the sampaguita heritage of the city but also its rich culture.
With the theme “Mabighani sa Samyo ng Sampaguita,” the Sampaguita Festival, now scheduled from May 22 to 25, aims not only to promote the city government’s efforts to revive its once-dominant sampaguita-rearing and sampaguita-trading industry but also highlight the “best of the best” of San Pedrense talent.
In a message to OpinYon Laguna, Jhe-rico Sam Colina, head of the San Pedro City Tourism, Culture and Arts Office (CTCAO), noted that the city government’s programs to rejuvenate the sampaguita industry will once again take center stage in this year’s lineup of activities.
“Sa palagay naming, ang magiging highlight po ng ating mga aktibidad ay ang Sampaguita Garden Competition. Bale walong mga barangay at homeowners’ association (HOA) po ang naglaan ng lupa nila para pagtamnan at gawing sampaguita garden,” Colina said.
“First time po ang aktibidad na ito at nais namin palawakin sa susunod para mas maparami ang mga tanim na sampaguita,” he added
Aside from this, there will also be a Sampaguita Creative Competition at Robinsons Galleria South on May 24, which will focus on the creation of centerpieces and installations made from sampaguita flowers.
“Galing po ang aktibidad na ito sa naging matagumpay na Sampaguita Garland Competition natin last year. Ngayong taon mas papalawakin natin ang mga nagagawa out of sampaguita. Isa sa mga inspirasyon na ito ay si Serge Igonia, ang kilalang floorist at stylist ng sampaguita,” Colina explained.
Of course, there will be the usual run of activities, concerts and competitions, such as the Sampaguita Dance Fest on May 22; the much-awaited Ginoo at Binibining San Pedro pageant on May 23; the Agos ng Musika concert on May 24; and the Sampaguita "Petstival" and PBBR American Bully Show on May 25.
“Lahat ng major events ay mapapanood rin po ng live sa official Facebook page ng Sampaguita Festival. Kaya’t iniimbitahan po natin ang ating mga kababayan, taga-San Pedro man o turista, na makiisa at makisaya sa ating Sampaguita Festival,” the CTCAO head added.
